Reflection

My favorite part of the Genius Project was teaching the girls how to play basketball. The most difficult part of the project was the interview. I feel like I am pretty good at holding myself accountable in a self-directed project because I met the deadlines every time. Also, I did well keeping up with the blog posts.

Given the fact that college courses are more self-directed, I felt like my strength for keeping me on track was being able to meet the deadlines. However, the struggles I encountered were being able to go to the practices and games because during that time, I had my own practices and games I had to attend to that conflicted the schedule. In the next 2 years, I could grow in my SDL skills by doing more projects like this.

Exhibitions

I am feeling somewhat nervous about the exhibition because I will be showing my video to 50 or more people and I still haven't interviewed the players or started making the video yet. Also, I don't really know how it is going to turn out. This project wasn't hard for me because at the beginning of the project, I talked to the coach about it and he gave me a set schedule of when to come so I was able to keep up with my due dates. Honestly, this project was pretty fun because I got to share something I am passionate about with other kids.

Midway Action Plan

My Genius Project has been going great so far because things are going as planned. So far I have gone to 5 practices and have taught the girls basic fundamentals and I still have 2 practices left. I've also recorded some of their games, which I'm going to include some clips of it in my final product. I still have some stuff left to do before doing the final product like attending practices, recording games, and interviewing the players.

Here is a clip of one of the games:

Study Trip

During the study trip, we went to UC Berkeley and I interviewed two groups: Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and 100 Strong. EOP's mission is to give support to low-income students, first generation college students, and historically underrepresented students for their success and growth in college. 100 Strong's mission is to work with female high school students by mentoring and helping them impact their community.

Public Pitch

My public pitch went pretty well, but I think I could have gotten a better grade if I demonstrated "consistent control of eye contact, volume, pronunciation, and body posture," used "some variation in volume and inflection to emphasize key points," and "used some body movements to enhance articulation." My use of multimedia in my oral presentation was good because the information and visuals I incorporated in my Prezi was purposeful and added interest to my presentation. The amount of work I put into my presentation did reflect the outcome because I mentally knew what I was going to get right after I presented.

One public pitch I thought went well was Angelika and Mai's presentation about creating a web comic to entertain people. I liked how they made their PowerPoint very interesting through the use of a bunch a funny gifs. Even though the gifs were funny, it didn't really distract me from their presentation. It actually served a point and made their presentation more amusing, since their actual project is making people laugh.

About My Project

My project is about teaching kids life lessons through the basics of basketball. I am excited about this project because I get to do something I'm passionate about and at the same time, help kids learn important skills that will last a lifetime. There aren't any difficulties in my project because I already have the basketballs needed for the practices and I already talked to the coach about helping out his team. Anyhow for my public pitch, I'm going to create a Prezi. I am somewhat prepared because I have almost everything I'm going to include in it, but I haven't started on it yet.
